History
Games
For a long period, Princess Daisy was considered one of the most obscure characters of the Mario franchise. Her first debut, Super Mario Land, was in a game which featured a large cast of new characters that failed to catch on and have since been largely forgotten.
After her debut on the Game Boy, Daisy did not appear in another Mario game for over ten years, with the exception of her role as Luigi's caddy in NES Open Tournament Golf. She was eventually brought back for the Nintendo 64's Mario Tennis. She quickly became a regular character in the Mario Party series and the Mario sports titles, often appearing as a partner for Luigi or Peach.
Although she has not appeared in a platform game since Super Mario Land or any of the Mario RPGs, she is now a standard character in the and Mario Party games, and has earned a place as a member of Mario's all-star crowd.
She made her debut in the Mario Kart series with as a partner to Princess Peach. She has also appeared in the recent Mario Kart DS as an unlockable player. Like Peach, Daisy is a lightweight character that has good acceleration and handling, but a low top speed.
In Mario Tennis for Nintendo 64, she was voiced by Kate Flemming. Daisy is supposedly less girly than Peach. She usually sounds chipper and speaks in more contemporary-sounding slang than Peach does. Daisy's voice has been supplied by actress Deanna Mustard since Mario Party 3.
Super Mario Bros. movie
This character is often wrongly applied to Princess Peach, in part because the Super Mario Bros. movie refers to the main princess-in-peril as "Princess Daisy" — not "Princess Toadstool", as Peach was then known in North America. Still, the movie also makes its Princess Daisy a love interest for Luigi, not Mario, but this is likely only because Luigi's younger, more open-minded character fit much better into the romance story, as opposed to Bob Hoskins' more cynical, world-weary Mario. In the film, Daisy was portrayed by Samantha Mathis. Here, she has a piece of the meteorite that banished the dinosaurs to another dimension, and which King Koopa needs in order to conquer the humans' dimension. After Luigi becomes infatuated with her, Daisy is kidnapped by King Koopa's cousins, Iggy and Spike, and taken to Dinohattan. There, she learns that her father, the true king of Dinohattan, was turned into a fungus after being put in Bowser's de-evolutionary machine. Eventually, after the Mario Bros. defeat Koopa, Daisy stays behind in Dinohattan to help her now-restored father. The movie ends with Daisy showing up at Mario and Luigi's apartment to alert them that there's another problem going on, apparently setting up an eventual sequel, which never came.
Other appearances
- Daisy also appeared in the Game Boy comic books, where, as in Super Mario Land, she was the unwilling prisoner of Tatanga, hoping that Mario would eventually rescue her.
- In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the player can change Peach's color template to that of Daisy's N64 appearance, giving Peach a yellow dress, brown hair and flower-shaped earrings.
Appearance
In her first appearances, Daisy had pale skin, long hair, and a white pattern on her dress. In later games, such as Mario Party 3 and Mario Tennis, her appearance was refined, giving her a rounder face, slightly darker skintone, and a daisy-motif to her accessories, with flower jewels appearing on her crown, earrings, and brooch. In Mario Party 4, Daisy's character design was altered again, giving her shorter hair with a new dress design, and once again a paler skin tone. Daisy continues to slowly change with each new game. In Mario Kart DS Daisy is a heavier light weight then Peach, likely due to muscle seeing as Daisy appears to be skiny. In most of her game appearances, Daisy has consistantly worn yellow. Usually in the form of a collared dress, with white and orange accents. In NES Open Tournament Golf however, she was depicted in a blue dress of a similar design. In Mario sports titles, she is usually depicted in orange shorts with a yellow shirt and daisy accesories. In her early look Daisy wore a red crown, and during some of the Nintendo 64 games she wore a pink crown. Nowadays she wears a gold one.
Relationships
Daisy has been good friends with Peach ever since her appearance in Mario Tennis for the N64. The two are often partnered up in Mario spinoffs. It is rumored that Daisy is Luigi's girlfriend. In Super Smash Bros. Melee in Daisy's trophy Bio it says "After her appearance in Mario Golf, some gossips started portraying her as Luigi's answer to Mario's Peach." When Daisy and Luigi are teamed up in recent Mario Party games, the two's team name is "Steady Sweeties". Also, once you beat a tournament with Daisy in Mario Power Tennis she skates in to receive her trophy from Luigi and calls him "Sweetie".Trivia
- The Super Mario Land manual on page #13 lists her as "Daisy Princess" even though they obviously meant to call her "Princess Daisy."
- Daisy's trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee has a mysterious third eye that players can view by zooming in on the back of her head. This was fixed in PAL and US version 1.2.
- Daisy's trophy also says that she appeared in Mario Golf for N64 and GBC rather than Mario Tennis for N64 and GBC. Although Daisy appeared in NES Open Tournament Golf in 1991, the only Mario Golf game she has appeared in is , and that game was released nineteen months after Super Smash Bros. Melee.
