Probe (StarCraft)

In StarCraft, Probes are constructed at the Nexus. Each costs 50 minerals and 1 Psi, having 20 hit points and 20 shield points. Each Probe can emit a particle beam, which does 5 points of normal damage, but is mainly used for mining purposes. Probes can be upgraded for better armor and shields at the Forge. Like other races' workers, Probes do not trigger Spider Mines.
Probes are extremely efficient in construction. Unlike the workers of other races, all a Probe has to do to "construct" something, is to lay down a tiny beacon. The beacon allows buildings pre-crafted by Protoss engineers elsewhere (mostly Aiur) to teleport onto the battlefield. Once the teleportation process starts, the Probe can move on to other duties, such as mining or summoning another building. However, this technique does have a limitation: Protoss buildings are powered by the psionic matrix, so they can only be summoned in the vicinity of Pylons. Only Pylons, Nexuses and Assimilators can be summoned outside the working range of another Pylon.
"It takes one Probe to build an empire." - Ancient Protoss saying.
Shields take full damage from all types of damage, so a single blast from a Terran Siege Tank in Siege Mode will instantly kill a Probe, whereas a Drone or an SCV would survive. However, this does not make Probes the weakest workers: because Protoss plasma shields regenerate more rapidly than Zerg heal, a Probe kills a Drone in direct one-on-one combat, even though the Drone has 40 full hit points.
