It is sometimes used by non-Irish Catholics in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States in areas where significant numbers of both religious backgrounds are present.
The term isn't used exclusively to denote adherence to Christianity. Often it is used by way of implying adherence to the political ideology of Irish unionism, or loyalism.
