Prod is a shortened name for Protestant. Generally used in everyday speech to denote that someone or some thing is of Protestant origin or background, it is sometimes used in a derisive way by Republicans or Nationalists. It is most commonly used in Northern Ireland and Scotland, though usage is not limited to those regions.

It is sometimes used by non-Irish Catholics in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States in areas where significant numbers of both religious backgrounds are present.

The term isn't used exclusively to denote adherence to Christianity. Often it is used by way of implying adherence to the political ideology of Irish unionism, or loyalism.
