Protivin is a city in Chickasaw County, Iowa, United States. The population was 317 at the 2000 census. It was established by the Czech settlers around 1855. They named the city after the town of Protivín in the south of the Czech Republic.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there are 317 people, 154 households, and 79 families residing in the city. The population density is 255.0/km² (663.5/mi²). There are 180 housing units at an average density of 144.8/km² (376.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 99.68% White and 0.32% Asian. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 154 households out of which 20.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% are married couples living together, 4.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 48.7% are non-families. 43.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 29.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.06 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 29.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 108.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,779, and the median income for a family is $35,156. Males have a median income of $30,179 versus $18,125 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,818. 13.2% of the population and 10.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.3% of those under the age of 18 and 20.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
