Proto-metal
Encyclopedia : P : PR : PRO : Proto-metal
Proto-metal is a term used to describe a variety of hard rock artists (most notably Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple) that performed music that influenced and helped shape heavy metal, but could not, by today's standards, be classified as such. However, some of the artists described as proto-metal may later have gone on to play music that can be classified as heavy metal.
Many of the later bands associated with the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal," such as Iron Maiden, were considered heavy metal acts from their inception.
