Providencia (municipality, Chile)

Encyclopedia : P : PR : PRO : Providencia (municipality, Chile)

Providencia (Spanish "providence") is a municipality ("comuna") of Chile located in the Santiago Metropolitan Region. It is a higher-income, eastern municipality. Closer to the center of the city than other rich neighborhoods, its architecture is relatively high-density compared to Las Condes and Vitacura. It contains many apartment towers and single-family homes, as well as a significant part of Santiago's commerce. It has an area of 14.4 km² and a population of 120,874 (2002 census). The area is served by the Santiago subway's Lines 1, 4 and 5.

Providencia includes Barrio Suecia, filled with pubs, night clubs, and other party locations, and Barrio Bellavista, a bohemian area populated with artists and performers. The latter is in the shadow of Cerro San Cristóbal, which is a prominent hill in the city topped by a 22m statue of The Virgin Mary. The northern area of the municipality is the financial and business district, while most of the rest of it contains high-priced residential development.

Other notable areas of interest include the Metropolitan Zoo, the Telesférico (an aerial gondola that transports tourists between the end of Avenida Pedro de Valdivia to the top of Cerro San Cristóbal), and several television stations, and the Latter-day Saint temple. The municipality also has many embassies, including those of Italy, Russia, China, and Uruguay.
