Encyclopedia : P : PR : PRO : Province of Brandenburg
The Province of Brandenburg (German: ) was a province of the Kingdom of Prussia and the Free State of Prussia from 1815 to 1946. It was created from the Margraviate of Brandenburg, including Lower Lusatia and the Neumark east of the Oder River, but did not include the Altmark west of the Elbe River, which belonged to the Province of Saxony.
The city of Berlin was separated from Brandenburg in 1920 to form a separate province. After World War II Brandenburg was part of the Soviet occupation zone, and except for the territories east of the Oder-Neisse line that were ceded to Poland it became part of East Germany in 1949. Following the German reunification in 1990 Brandenburg was reestablished as a state of the Federal Republic of Germany.
