Turkmenistan is divided into 5 provinces or welayatlar (singular - welayat):
- Ahal (capital Annau)
- Balkan (formerly Nebit Dag, capital Balkanabat)
- Dashhowuz (formerly Tashauz, capital Dashhowuz)
- Lebap (formerly Charjew, capital Turkmenabat, )
- Mary (capital Mary).
