Puerto Toro

Encyclopedia : P : PU : PUE : Puerto Toro

Puerto Toro is a small Chilean village on Isla Navarino. It is the southernmost community on the globe (if one discounts Antarctic research stations as communities), located at [55°05′00″S, 067°06′00″W]. Puerto Toro is inhabited by about 50 fishermen and their families.

Over a hundred years ago, Puerto Toro was one of the most important towns in southern Tierra del Fuego as a result of "gold fever." Once interest in exploring for gold passed, however, Puerto Toro's importance diminished. Today, Puerto Toro is known for "centolla", the prized southern king crab.
