Puuwai is the main (and only) settlement on the Hawaiian island of Niihau. It is at the center of the small island, and the 180 or so native Hawaiians who live in this village speak the Hawaiian language. The community lives as they did hundreds of years ago, and the modern amenities of life are extremely limited. Puuwai has a one room schoolhouse. Most residents are registered members of the Republican party.
