Pyramids of the Sun and Moon
Encyclopedia : P : PY : PYR : Pyramids of the Sun and Moon
The Pyramids of the Sun and Moon are the two largest monuments in the ancient Mexican city and religious complex of Teotihuacán. The Pyramid of the Sun is the second largest pyramid in the new world, after the Great Pyramid of Cholula. The Pyramid of the Moon is at the top (northern) end of the Avenue of the Dead (Miccaohtli in Nahuatl), and the Pyramid of the Sun is to the east of the avenue, about a third of the way south.
The Pyramid of the Sun is about 225 m. on each side and 63 m. high. It is built over a cave, which was used for ritual purposes; that may be the reason the site was chosen. The Pyramid of the Moon is smaller.
Also at Teotihuacán is the Pyramid of Quetzalcóatl, which is small by comparison, but is much more ornate than the two larger structures.
