Pyromania (album)
Encyclopedia : P : PY : PYR : Pyromania (album)
Pyromania (literally meaning "a mania for fire") is the third album by British hard rock band Def Leppard, released in 1983 (see 1983 in music). The album contains three sizeable hits "Photograph", "Foolin'" and "Rock of Ages". The latter featured the intro "Gunter glieben glauchen globen," which many were led to believe was "walking silently through a forest" in German. It is actually gibberish spoken by Robert John "Mutt" Lange as an alternative to the standard "1, 2, 3, 4" count often used at the beginning of a recording session.
During the recording of the album, original guitarist Pete Willis was fired for alcohol abuse and was replaced by Phil Collen, from rock band Girl.
Thomas Dolby recorded some of the synthesizer parts on this album under the alias Booker T. Boffin.
The Album is often a stable of 'produced rock' and set a high standard for 80s music production. In 2003, the album was ranked number 384 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Trivia
- The "Gunter glieben glauchen globen" at the beginning of "Rock Of Ages" came about when producer Mutt Lange uttered the phrase because he got bored of saying "one, two, three, four" over again. The band thought it was so amusing that it ended up on the final recording. As stated previously in this article, the phrase is not proper German and doesn't mean anything.
- The closing track, "Billy's Got A Gun", is immediately followed by a repeating drum machine and synth loop, which is unofficially entitled "The March of the Dreaded Zultrons".
- The original CD release contained two addition songs, remixes of "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" (differing from the album version by the presence of synthesizer tracks) that was released in 1984 with a video that featured guitarist Phil Collen, who was not in the band at the time of the original recording) as well as "Me & My Wine", a former b-side whose video parodied The Young Ones (TV series) with band members playing the roles. These were both deleted from the mid-90's re-release of the album.
