Question mark glitches are glitches that have appeared from the second generation of Pokémon video games (Pokémon Gold and Silver) onwards. Their predecessors are the infamous 'M and Missingno.. Due to the greater stability of the later generations, however, these glitches do not as adversely corrupt or affect the game as greatly 'M and Missingno. were capable of doing.

Red and Blue

????? boat

In Pokémon Red and Blue, there is an item named ????? that can only be obtained with a GameShark or similar device. It can only be used outside of battle, and it acts like a Pokémon's SURF. The presence of the item suggests that the original plan was to use an item, rather than a Pokémon move, to go on water.

Gold and Silver

In Pokémon Gold and Silver pair of games, ????? (often called the Missingno. of these games) are glitch Pokémon that do not appear normally. They are encountered through a cheating device such as Gameshark. They have Pokédex numbers of #000, #252, #254, and #255, and are commonly associated with the Pokémon Virus, or Pokérus.

EGG

Pokémon #253 is EGG — a wild egg that can be captured like a normal Pokémon, but cannot be used in battle. While regular eggs hatch into real Pokémon after the player walks a certain distance, this EGG will continuously hatch into another EGG, and will never hatch into a usable form. It was most likely used to test the hatching of pretty much any egg. This "egg" is sometimes confused with BadEGG, which did not appear until the Advance Generation games.

Ruby, Sapphire, and Pokémon Emerald

In Ruby and Sapphire and Emerald, there are four distinct glitch Pokémon.

? in a circle

????????? looks like a white question mark inside a black circle, within another circle of black and white rings, which is the symbol for an "unidentified Pokémon" picture in the Pokédex. It appears under #000 and are dangerous as are the Bad EGGs they are related to. The stats of the Pokémon are very low. If it is caught when the player has less than six Pokémon, it will appear in the player's party, and may appear as Bad EGG.

Here is one way to encounter ?????????:

  1. Using an Action Replay or Gameshark, enable the code that will allow your character to walk through walls.
  2. Go to any Pokemon Center and go up to the second floor.
  3. Using the code, go through the barrier to the right of the Link Battle Desk and go into the Battle Room.
  4. Stand on one of the red or blue marks.
  5. ????????? should appear. The game saves before the encounter.
????????? has no cry. It also has no HP left, making it appear to be fainted. In the Pokédex, it takes the form of the "Unknown Pokémon" picture. It can be caught with any ball, and it knows no attacks. However, it is not a permanent Pokémon; it will disappear after a while.

If this ????????? is caught more than once, the player's game data will be corrupted. All items in the player's bag will disappear except for the item in the first slot of the "Poké Balls" pocket. Below that item, there will be 32 "??????????s". These items do not really exist and do absolutely nothing. Why they appear at all is not known yet. Its other name is

If you use a cheating device when you first start the game and go out into the grass by walking through the fence with walk through walls , the ????????? will be your pokemon you fight with if you encounter a wild pokemon.

1 question mark

The second glitch Pokémon is ??. They can be any number from around #396 to #540, and look like two blocky question marks, which was the "unidentified Pokemon" symbol in the beta version of these games before being replaced by the ? in a circle. They have the same stats as Deoxys would in its normal form.

One example on which much data has been gathered is #396. While its attack and speed are high, its defenses are low. It only knows Tackle and will not learn any other move. It cannot breed, even with a Ditto, which adds to its rarity. It has the cry of an Unown, and can only be caught with a Master Ball (though occasionally it may even break out of a Master Ball). Its Pokédex data is somewhat glitchy and inaccessible after one catches it, but other than that, ?? #396 is absolutely safe; it is even acceptable in Battle Frontier facilities.

Bad EGG

"Bad EGG," which is related to ??????????, is an egg that will usually never hatch. It is sometimes caled BadEGG, BADEGG, and Bad Egg, and it is often confused for ? glitches. These EGGs appear when one enters a cheat code incorrectly, as well as when one tries to capture ??????????. Bad Egg will also appear if you use a Gameshark or Action Replay to either capture a rare Pokémon such as Jirachi, or get all 1-hit KOs. Having too many may corrupt memory. Though a scenario such as this rarely happens, when the hatching sequence for Bad EGG comes up, the game can do one of these things: The game will freeze, the egg will hatch into another egg and another perpetually, or the game will completely glitch itself up. Also, a Bad EGG will most likely have a random status condition, usually faint, burn, or Pokérus, when captured.

Miscellaneous

Most Advance Generation glitches require a GameShark or Action Replay. The actual names of these glitched Pokémon are either code or derivatives from attacks. Most will not learn any TMs or HMs. The easy way to acquire these glitches is through a Pokémon modifier code on a GameShark, just type in a number beyond that of Deoxys (which is the last three numbers in the code that would be 19A if one types in 200 one will get a ?), or type in 00. Giving Rare Candies to ? may freeze the game sometimes. This Pokémon can be used in battle and can be used in contests. One is most likely not allowed to use them in official battles, however.

This also works on a GameShark SP when entering the "Find any wild Pokémon" code with an invalid hex number. Most of them show up immediately, and have no attacks. When captured and used in a contest, the Pokémon seems to have an attack. It does the same thing as Tackle and looks like Tackle. However, sometimes, when one encounters one of these Pokémon, the game will freeze. Sometimes it will stay that way until one turns off the Game Boy, while other times, after a few seconds, a glitch Pokémon will appear. If this happens, that glitch Pokémon will always have the attack "Thunderpunch", "Ice Punch", or "Swallow" and, if one is lucky, another rare attack. Some can even Breed and learn TMs.
