History
In 2000, Omaha voters approved a $216 million bond issue to build a new convention center and arena; the remainder of the $291 million project was provided by private organizations and individuals. Naming rights to the arena were purchased by Qwest; Qwest Center Omaha opened in September 2003. Since then it has hosted some of the biggest acts in the world. An expansion of the Qwest Center arena by 1,472 seats began in May 2006. The project has an estimated cost of $5.7 million; it is expected to be complete in September 2006. This expansion will increase the number of seats available for basketball to 17,560; 16,680 for hockey; and 18,300 for concerts.
