REN21 is the [Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century]: a global policy network that provides a forum for international leadership on renewable energy. Its goal is to bolster policy development for the rapid expansion of renewable energies in developing and industrialised economies.

REN21 is an informal network open to a wide variety of dedicated stakeholders from the energy, development and environment sectors: governments, international institutions, non-governmental organisations, industry associations, and other related partnerships and initiatives

Origin and development

The establishment of the global policy network REN21 was embraced in the Political Declaration of the [International Conference for Renewable Energies], renewables 2004, that took place in Bonn, Germany, from 1 to 4 June 2004.

REN21 aims to strengthens the influence of the renewable energy community that came together at this conference, and to encourage common action among the diverse participants.

In June 2005 - precisely one year after the Bonn renewables conference - the Network's Steering Committee celebrated the official launch of REN21 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Central issues

REN21 has produced several internationally recognised policy issue papers to highlight the benefits of renewable energies, such as the "Renewables 2005: Global Status Report".

As the follow-up network to the Bonn conference, REN21 is also following up on the conference's International Action Programme (IAP). The IAP is a major substantial outcome by which conference participants voluntarily committed themselves to some 200 concrete actions for the promotion of renewable energy worldwide.
