RO4588161 is a proposed new antiviral drug that has just received human trials approval.

It is being developed by Roche (Switzerland) as an HCV Polymerase Inhibitor. It has only been tested on rats and mice in Germany so far. It will be tested on human healthy volunteers in Christchurch, New Zealand. The principal trial investigators are Dr Robson, Dr Rumball-Smith, Dr Waaka, Dr Wynne and Dr Stott.

Chemical name: Isobuttersäure-(2R,3S,4R)-5-(4-amino-2-oxo-2H-pyrimidin-1-yl)-2-azido-3,4-bis-isobutyryloxy-tetrahydro-furan-2-yl-methylester-hydrochloride (C21 H30 N6 O8 HCl)

The Acute LD-50 (LD=lethal dose) is >3000mg in mice and rats.

The human effects are unknown to date.
