RPGe was one of the first major translation groups in the video game fan translation scene. The group was formed around the goal of completing a translation of Final Fantasy V.
The name was chosen and the group was established by founders Shadow, David Timko, Hooie and Thermopyle around 8:43 p.m. EST, July 8, in #ff5e on the EsperNet IRC network. After choosing its name, all operations moved to #rpge.
The group remained in operation until early 1999, when it disbanded due to disinterest among members. Most RPGe projects fell to groups started by the members focused on those projects.
Projects
During its history, RPGe worked on the following games:- Dragon Quest I&II: Super Famicom title published by Enix. Started after Quatch and Lord Pinto, an earlier translation team, disappeared and abandoned their work on the game.
- Final Fantasy V: Super Famicom title published by Squaresoft. The project was started by the founders and completed by Som2Freak, Barubary and Harmony7.
- Front Mission: Brought into the group when Stories joined. After RPGe collapsed, it was completed as a solo project between Stories and F.H.
- Hanjuku Hero: Strategy-RPG title for the Super Famicom by Squaresoft. Never completed.
- Magic Knight Rayearth: RPG title for the Super Famicom based on a popular anime series.
- Pokémon Blue: Joint project between Shadow and two non-RPGe members, Hiroshi and The_Ned. The project was dropped after Shadow left the group due to Nintendo's existing plans for Pokémon in the USA.
- Ranma 1/2: Akanekodan Teki Hihou: Super Famicom title by Toho. Started as a side project by Shadow/D. Continued by Shadow after he left RPGe, but later dropped. The script was being manually inserted with a paper translation by Lando of EICN #emu.
- Seiken Densetsu 3: An action-RPG by Squaresoft picked up by the group in competition with De-Jap. The project was later completed in a joint effort between Lina`chan and Neill Corlett.
