Racaille

Encyclopedia : R : RA : RAC : Racaille

"Racaille" and its verlan form "caillera" is a French derogatory term that roughly means rabble (although some translate it as riff-raff or dregs) and has been specifically associated in France since the nineties with some young residents (minor offenders in particular) of the poor banlieues or cités. It is widely used to name their culture, and particularly their clothing style (see chav). It gained international notoriety when used by French interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, to describe the residents of crime-ridden neighborhoods. His comment is widely attributed to causing the 2005 Paris riots in France.
