<strong>Racing Club de Avellaneda</strong> is a <a href="/term/Football_(soccer)">football</a> team based in the <a href="/term/Avellaneda">Avellaneda</a> <em>barrio</em> (neighbourhood) of the metropolitan area of <a href="/term/Buenos_Aires">Buenos Aires</a>, <a href="/term/Argentina">Argentina</a>. Its colors are light blue and white vertical stripes.<p>

Founded on <a href="/term/March_25">March 25</a>, <a href="/term/1903">1903</a>, Racing has won seven professional local championships (1949, 1950, 1951, 1958, 1961, 1967 and 2001), four international championships (1967 <a href="/term/Copa_Libertadores_de_América">Copa Libertadores</a>, 1967 <a href="/term/European/South_American_Cup">Intercontinental Cup</a>, 1988 <a href="/term/Supercopa_Sudamericana">Supercopa</a>, 1988 Supercopa Interamericana). During the amateur era, Racing was the team that won more championships (1913, 1914, 1915, 1916, 1917, 1918, 1919, 1921, 1925) and other cups both local and international. <p>

In 1950 the new football stadium was inaugurated, and named after President <a href="/term/Juan_Domingo_Perón">Juan Domingo Perón</a>. The stadium is nicknamed <em>"Avellaneda's Cylinder".</em><p>

In 1983 <em>La Academia</em> descended to Primera B category, staying there until 1985.<p>

Racing was the first Argentine football team to win an international championship (and the first to win the Supercopa), and the first team to win three local championships in a row. <p>

In 1999 Racing Club filed for bankruptcy, but its supporters helped the club to recover. It is the first Argentine club to be run by a company: Blanquiceleste S.A., directed by Fernando Marín. In 2001 Racing won the Apertura championship, breaking a 35-year period without championships.<p>

Together with <a href="/term/Boca_Juniors">Boca Juniors</a>, <a href="/term/Club_Atlético_River_Plate">River Plate</a>, <a href="/term/Club_Atlético_San_Lorenzo_de_Almagro">San Lorenzo</a> and <a href="/term/Club_Atlético_Independiente">Independiente</a> (Racing's traditional rival), Racing is one of the "big five" of the Argentine football.<p>
