Raël (born Claude Vorilhon on September 30, 1946) is the founder and self-proclaimed spiritual guide of the Raelian Movement. He was born in Vichy, Allier, France.

Before founding the Raelian Movement, Vorilhon was a sports journalist and a singer. He founded his own car racing magazine, Auto Pop.

Career in the arts and sport

-->Under the pseudonym Claude Celler, Vorilhon released a few records between 1966 and 1971, widely inspired by his idol Jacques Brel. They included songs like :
Later, in Clermont-Ferrand, he founded a motor racing magazine which became quite successful. In 1974, following his supposed UFO encounter, he almost developed a stomach ulcer before finally deciding to give up his much loved career as a sports-car journalist and devote himself fully to the task assigned to him by Yahweh - the extra-terrestrial that he claims to have met. Shortly after a surprisingly successful first public conference, he founded MADECH - a group of people interested in helping Rael in his huge task, which later became the International Raelian Movement.

Although Rael is retired from professional auto racing, in June 2005 (June 59AH on the Raelian calendar) he started his own racing team for a PC racing game called Live for Speed ([source]).

Message

Vorilhon claims that he has experienced two extra-terrestrial encounters, which are the foundation of his ideology. The first of these encounters was on the morning of December 13 1973. Whilst walking in Puy de Lassolas, Vorilhon claims to have seen a flying saucer that was landing slowly.

An extraterrestrial being came out of the craft, and told him (in French) that he had come to meet him and give him a message and that it was Vorilhon's mission to pass this message on to people in every nation. His meetings with the human extra-terrestrial (named Yahweh) lasted for six consecutive days, one hour each day, and are described in his first book "Le Livre qui dit la vérité" (The Book That Tells the Truth).

In this book Rael claims that every life form on Earth was created by advanced human scientists from another planet with 25,000 years of scientific advances who, according to Raelians were originally called Elohim or "those who came from the sky". Allegedly, some forty prophets in Earth's history were sent by Elohim, but their messages were misunderstood and distorted by humans, largely because of the difference in the level of scientific understanding between the advanced race and our primitive one. The primitive mystification of "technologically sophisticated visitors" is paralleled by time and again in history, including recent happenings such as the formation of the so-called Cargo Cult in association with an island that was temporarily occupied by what natives thought were "white gods" but were actually Americans.

Allegedly, Raël was given the "demystifying" mission of informing the world of humanity's true origins and building an embassy in preparation for the return of the Elohim. The extraterrestrials explained certain mysteries to him (which he recounts in his book), based on new readings of sacred texts such as the Bible. On October 7 1975 he claims he was again contacted by the Elohim who took him to their planet. There he met Buddha, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad and received many teachings which are passed on in his second book "Les extra-terrestres m'ont emmené sur leur planète" (Extraterrestrials Took Me To Their Planet). He claims that he discovered wonderful, harmonious and peaceable beings who taught him a philosophy based on pleasure, love, knowledge and conscience, free of money, sickness and war.

Human Rights

Rael is enthusiatic supporter of Human rights listed on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. A Raelian variant of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights can be found at [this website].

Genetically Modified Food

Rael teaches that Genetically Modified Food is the only way to stop hunger everywhere in the world. He also encourages that it be used to combine elements of different food together, in a genetic way, to make what people eat in the future more interesting.

Nanotechnology

In future, Rael says, nanotechnology will allow us to have micro-distributive power generation (a power plant in each house), fur-like furnishings that are self-cleaning with hair-like fibers that move on their own, and even biological robots. Nanotechnology also controls biology, so Rael expects someday that meat be grown in a machine by arranging the basic elements from Mendeleev's table. In Rael's book, Extraterrestrials took me to their planet (book number 2 in his latest compilation Intelligent Design), he says that at the Planet of Eternals, he heard "music [which] made the flowers bend and sway in rhythm... they changed colors with each change of musical style".

Geniocracy

Human Cloning (Virgin Birth)

In 2001 Rael, together with Clonaid, held a press conference where he made claims of successful human cloning. The cloned baby's identity was withheld. [link]

His claim of being the Maitreya

Rael has claimed directly to people attending Asia Raelian seminars, that someone born in France, a country which is often symbolized by the cock (or rooster), west of the Orient, meets the criteria of the Maitreya. Rael himself claims to be this individual[link]:

The name "Maitreya" means either "The World Unifier" or simply "The Friend". According to Buddhist teaching, he is a very human God-man whom Buddha predicted to be a greater Buddha than himself.

According to earlier Buddhist prophecies, including those in the Agon Sutra[link], the predicted Maitreya should appear in the Buddhist year 3000, in the country of the cock.

In the standard Buddhist calendar, this would put the appearance of Maitreya at the year 2457 AD. However, the calendar of Mahayana "Northern Branch" Buddhism, which is not widely known since the "Southern Branch" calendar has been established as the official calendar of Buddhism, gives a different answer. In the Mahayana tradition, that can be found in China and Japan (hence "Northern"), the year 3000 corresponds to the year 1973 in the Christian calendar, which would mean that it already has passed. One website, by a school of Mahayana Buddhism notes this fact[link]: the Northern Branch calendar of Buddhism and the Christian Calendar have a difference of approximately 1 027 years. This would put the birth of Buddha at the year 1027 BC, the same year of the claimed birth of Beddou (Fot), who, according to Chinese legend, was a "god" born of a virgin. According to the authors of the book, The World's Sixteen Crucified Saviors, the New York Correspondent of 1828 wrote that, "All the Eastern writers agree in placing the birth of Beddou (in) 1027 B.C. The doctrines of this Deity prevailed over Japan, China, and Ceylon."

To date, Rael himself claims that this country of the cock can only be France, as the leader of this country during his birth was Charles DeGaulle and the fact that the rooster was once strongly considered to be a symbol of France.
