History
Induction
Qarrigat was recruited on Wolsoon, his homeworld. Qarrigat was the third representative of the Guardians sent into Apokolips, the first two never returned. Battling his way to the power center of the planet, Quarrigat challenged Darkseid directly. Quarrigat got the raw end of the deal. Darkseid defeated the warrior, crushed his hand and sent the crippled soldier back to his masters as a warning to those who would invade Apokolips. Despite his injuries and defeat, Qarrigat recommended to the Guardians that an invasion of Apokolips was the only way to answer Darkseid and end his rule. The Apokolips Campaign
Realizing they did not have the manpower to challenge Darkseid, the Guardians ordered the expansion of the Corps seeking a vast army to overcome Darkseid. Quarrigat and other Lanterns spread across the universe hunting down candidates for the great war in the making. One by one the Corps grew, and when it was 3,600 strong, the Guardians decided to end Darkseid's rule. Leaping across the dimensional barrier between the Universe and Apokolips the Corps poured into Apokolips. Intent on succeeding, the Lanterns instead met slaughter. Darkseid's scientists had deciphered the Green Lantern Power Ring. Armed with the knowledge that ring had trouble with all things yellow, Darkseid's Parademons came ready. Captured, tortured and killed, 2,400 lanterns fell that day.
With their rings depleted and the Main battery of Oa unable to transmit power across the dimensional barrier, the survivors re-grouped as well as they could. Under Quarrigat's command the soldiers re-enforced themselves with Parademon weaponry and again attacked Apokolips. The Lanterns found themselves in bloody hand-to-hand combat and found themselves losing against refreshed enemies. In a desperate attempt to snatch victory out of defeat Quarrigat single handedly attacked the ruler of Apokolips.
Just as Quarrigat gained the upper hand over Darkseid, the Guardians emerged into the Apokolips dimension. They stopped the assault on Apokolips, ending the war immediately and announcing a truce and an agreement with Darkseid. The Guardians agreed they would not interfere in Darkseid's domain with a caveat, Darkseid was not to challenge Green Lantern protected space. Not willing to face the unrestrained power of the Guardians themselves, Darkseid agreed to these terms with a caveat of his own. With the Guardians' troops decimated, Darkseid demanded a spoil of war: Quarrigat. The soldier was to be abandoned to Darkseid as a prisoner, caged and bound. The Guardians agreed. The surviving Lanterns withdrew, minus their leader. As they were about to leave, Ash-Pak-Glif, a Green Lantern, secretly passed a power ring and Battery to Quarrigat. With that done, the Corps retreated with their masters and left their leader a prisoner on the black world of Apokolips. The Guardians, fearing dissension in the ranks, ordered all records of this bloody chapter expunged. Quarrigat and the Campaign were to be forgotten.
Privately, among the Guardians, there was confidence that Quarrigat would more than survive the hell of Apokolips, in fact the Guardians felt that it was not Quarrigat trapped on Apokolips, but Darkseid trapped with Quarrigat. It was even suggested the Quarrigat had absorbed his own power battery, explaining away the problem of Quarrigat's ring still having power after many years in Apokalips' underground.
Legend of the Green Flame
Over the years Quarrigat refused to be culled by Apokolips. He fought secretly for the Dogs of Apokolips in time becoming a rumour and a myth; known as the Legend of the Green Flame. Darkseid was not oblivious of the Green Flame and one day confronted Quariggat. Discovering Quarrigat alive, he decided to let him live, allowing the Green Flame to give hope so that Darkseid could crush the same.Quarrigat was discovered alive by Kyle Rayner and Orion when they found themselves stranded on Apokolips. Wounded and in bad shape, they were discovered by the millennia old Quarrigat. Quarrigat, initially sure they were there to finally rescue him, was dismayed to hear that he was forgotten, the Guardians wiped out and the Corps murdered. Discovered by parademons, Quarrigat fought off the hunting parties long enough to enable Rayner and Orion to escape Apokolips, Quarrigat was unable to escape along with them. Rayner and Orion now believe Quarrigat died in defending them however the old warrior remains on Apokolips, hiding in the shadows, fighting in secret against his ancient nemesis: Darkseid.
Notes
Qarrigat is quite possibly immortal, given that he has lived centuries on Apokolips. He has used a stasis field to maintain his power ring so it is possible he has used the same technology to maintain himself.Other links
