Rana dynasty

The Rana dynasty is a family who usurped control of Nepal from the mid-19th century until 1951, reducing the monarch to a figurehead and ruling through hereditary government positions.

Jang Bahadur was the first ruler from this family. He was named Rana, after an old title denoting martial glory used by Rajput princes in northern India. His descendants took this name as their family name.

The Rana dynasty merged into a powerful Rana Family Clan and contributed socio, economic and political scenario in context to Nepal and its development. The powerful Rana Family and its members are still influential in the country with their huge wealth and power. Some aristocratic and prominent Rana Families are Nara Shamsher Rana Family; Prabal Shamsher Rana Family; Prabhakar Shamsher Rana Family; Bhakti Shamsher Rana Family; Rukma Shamsher Rana Family; Aditya Shamsher Rana Family; Sachit Shamsher Rana Family; Rama Rana Malla Family.

The aristrocracy of the Rana Family and their close alliance with the ruling Shah dynasty is knitted closely with marriage alliances and businesses. These two ruling houses of the Ranas and Shahs contibutes to power sharing and priviledges in the Kingdom.
