Ray Liotta (born Raymond Julian Vicimarli on December 18, 1954) is an American actor. He is well known for his roles in Field of Dreams, Goodfellas, Cop Land, and Blow. CBS has announced that Liotta will star in a new television series entitled Smith set to debut in fall 2006.
Liotta was born in Newark, New Jersey of "mostly Scottish with a bit of Italian descent" [link], and was adopted six months after birth by Alfred Liotta, the president of a local Democratic club, and Mary, an appointed township clerk. Both of his parents unsuccessfully ran for local office. His last name was changed to Liotta after being adopted.
Liotta studied acting at the University of Miami where he performed in the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre.
In addition to his movie roles, Liotta provided the voice of Tommy Vercetti for the 2002 videogame . He also narrated "Inside the Mafia " for the National Geographic Channel.
In 2005, Liotta had a memorable guest appearance on the television drama ER playing Charlie Metcalf in the episode Time of Death. The role earned him an Emmy for "Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series."
One of his earliest roles was as Joey Perrini in the daytime program Another World.
In Field of Dreams, Liotta played the left-handed hitting Shoeless Joe Jackson. Because Liotta himself is a right-handed hitter, the character appears as a right-handed hitter in the film.
Film quotes
From Goodfellas:
- "And when the cops, they assigned a whole army to stop Jimmy, what'd he do? He made them partners."
- "When they found Carbone in the meat truck, he was frozen so stiff it took them two days to thaw him out for the autopsy."
- "For a second, I thought I was dead. But when I heard all the noise, I knew they were cops. Only cops talk that way. If they'd been wiseguys, I wouldn't have heard a thing. I would've been dead."
From Field of Dreams:
- "If you build it, he will come."
