Reşiţa

Encyclopedia : R : RE : REI : Reşiţa

Reşiţa (German: Reschitz, Hungarian: Resicabánya, Serbian: Rešica/Решица) is a city in western Romania and the capital of Caraş-Severin County, in the Banat region.

Located on former Austrian Crown land and founded during the life of the Austrian Empire, this city was of great importance to the Austrian Crown due to the industrialisation in the area and its strategic geographical positioning.

An important iron and steel center (the local factory is called CSR - Combinatul Siderurgic Reşiţa), Reşiţa is the site of blast furnaces, iron foundries, and plants producing electrical appliances, chemicals, machinery, and metals. A mining centre in Roman times, the present-day city was founded in the 18th century when a foundry was established here. Its 2004 population was 83,985.

The name of Reşiţa has its origin in the Slavic "Rechitza", which is derived from "reka", river.

Also, the city is a hub for leisure locations all around. Near Reşiţa, not so far away, one can find the well-known ski resort Semenic, as well as Lake Gozna (also known as Crivaia), Lake Secu and the Trei Ape lake. Also worth mentioning are Gărâna (also known as Wolfsberg), Brebu (also known as Weidental), and Văliug (also known as Franzdorf).
