Real Madrid Castilla
Encyclopedia : R : RE : REA : Real Madrid Castilla
Real Madrid Castilla is a Spanish football team that plays in the Segunda División A. It is the reserve side of Real Madrid. They play their home games at Valdebebas.
Unlike the English League, reserve teams in Spain play in the same football pyramid as their senior team rather than a separate league. However reserve teams cannot play in the same division as their senior team. Therefore Real Madrid Castilla are ineligible for promotion to the Primera Division. Reserve teams are also no longer permitted to enter the Copa del Rey or to have their own distinct names. In the past the reserve teams of both Real Madrid and CF Barcelona have blurred the lines between being a reserve team and a separate entity. In addition only under-23 players, or under-25 players with a professional contract can switch between senior and reserve teams.
History
Founded in 1943 as Plus Ultra CF, they made their debut in the Segunda División in 1949. In 1972 they were renamed Castilla CF. In 1980 they reached the final of the Copa del Rey and played Real Madrid. They lost 6-1 but because Real Madrid also won La Liga, Castilla CF qualified for the European Cup Winners Cup. They were knocked out in the first round by West Ham United. In 1984 they won the Segunda División with a team that included Emilio Butragueño, Manolo Sanchís, Martín Vazquéz, Míchel and Miguel Pardeza - later to become known as La Quinta del Buitre . However Castilla CF were ineligible for promotion because Real Madrid were already in the Primera Division. During the late 1980s, Rafael Benítez was a player at the club and between 1993 and 1995 he served as coach.
During the 1990s the use of separate names for reserve teams was banned and they became known as Real Madrid Deportiva and then Real Madrid B. In 2005 they adopted their current name.
