rec.sport.pro-wrestling, or RSPW, is a Usenet newsgroup dedicated to the discussion of professional wrestling. RSPW received its first post in January 1990[link], and counted 33342 posts during its busiest month to date in July, 1999[link]. It doubles as a forum for like-minded individuals to discuss other topics of interest, including music, sports, and pop culture. It mimics real wrestling by posters creating their own gimmicks, feuds, organizations, awards, and so forth.

A book on professional wrestling calls it "the largest online discussion forum for wrestling" and comments that much conversation in that forum "revolves about the issue of real versus fake; fans are obsessed with knowing the difference between a shoot and a work.", [p. 185] A New Zealand university professor named Sharon Mazer, who authored a book on professional wrestling notes in an introduction that she "keep[s] up with the rec.sports.pro-wrestling (RSPW) when time permits," and references it several times as a source for fan opinion. p. 9; RSPW mentioned on pages 115, 149, 159, 162, 163, 165 as sources for fan opinion.

From time to time a number posters have claimed to be various wrestling personalities including promoters Joe Pedicino, Dennis Coraluzzo, and Ed Zohn, and wrestlers Johnny B. Badd (aka Marc Mero) and the late Brian Pillman. Though impossible to verify with certainty, the RSPW FAQ takes these postings at face value. Additionally, wrestler Stevie Richards sported a shirt during an ECW event in 1995 with the words "RSPW SUCKS" on the front.[link]

Regardless of the overwhelming attention World Wrestling Entertainment generates and garners from the American media, rec.sport.pro-wrestling also covers other wrestling promotions, such as Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, Ring Of Honor, Japanese wrestling, smaller independent federations, and combat shoot sports such as K1, UFC, and PRIDE.
