A red eye is a cup of coffee with one shot of espresso in it. Another variation of the red eye is known as the black eye and is made with two shots of espresso. Taste varies widely. Some coffee drinkers see coffee/espresso drinks as overkill, while others find them refreshing and smooth.

The red eye has many monikers, depending on the region. In the midwest, a red eye is known as a depth charge. In parts of the south, the drink is called a shot in the dark.
