Reed Sea

Encyclopedia : R : RE : REE : Reed Sea

The Reed Sea, or Sea of Reeds, may have been an alternative name for the Red Sea, but not commonly used.

In Exodus the phrase yam suph refers to the body of water that the children of Israel crossed following their exodus from Egypt, and is most frequently translated as Red Sea. This same phrase is also used to denote the body of water referred to in 1 Kings 9:26: "And King Solomon made a navy of ships in Ezion-Geber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom." Eloth, or Elath, was the name of a seaport on the northern shore of the Red Sea in the Gulf of Aqaba.

Details of the Red Sea crossing are outlined in the Passage of the Red Sea.
