- Refractory clergymen, members of the clergy who refused to swear an oath to the French Revolution-era French state under the Civil Constitution of the Clergy. See non-juror.
- In medicine, refractory refers to a disease or condition that does not respond to common modes of treatment, e.g. refractory depression.
- In physiology, refractory period refers to the time after an action potential during which a membrane in unable to sustain another depolarization.
