Region Hovedstaden (Danish Capital Region or Copenhagen Capital Region) is a future administrative region created under the Danish Municipal Reform, which replaces the traditional counties ("amter") with five larger regions. At the same time, smaller municipalities will be merged into larger units, cutting the number of municipalities from 271 to 98. The reform will be implemented in Denmark on 1 January 2007.
The new Region Hovedstaden will consist of the municipalities of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, the former counties of Copenhagen and Frederiksborg, and the regional municipality of Bornholm.
