Rehoboth is a town in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,172 at the 2000 census. The town was incorporated in 1645.

At one time, the town of Rehoboth included part or all of the nearby communities of Attleboro, North Attleborough, Swansea, Somerset, and Seekonk in Massachusetts, and East Providence, Barrington, Bristol, Warren, Pawtucket, Cumberland, and Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 121.1 km² (46.8 mi²). 120.4 km² (46.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (0.60%) is water.

Rehoboth's surrounding towns are: Seekonk, MA, Swansea, MA, Dighton, MA, Taunton, MA, Norton, MA and Attleboro, MA.

Rehoboth's localities are: Four Corners, Hornbine, Kingmans Corner, North Rehoboth, Pecks Corner, Perrys Corner, Perryville, Rehoboth Village and South Rehoboth.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 10,172 people, 3,523 households, and 2,871 families residing in the town. The population density was 84.5/km² (218.8/mi²). There were 3,597 housing units at an average density of 29.9/km² (77.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.70% White, 0.35% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.50% of the population.

There were 3,523 households out of which 37.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.8% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.5% were non-families. 14.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.20.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $65,373, and the median income for a family was $71,992. Males had a median income of $45,557 versus $32,445 for females. The per capita income for the town was $26,467. About 2.1% of families and 3.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.7% of those under age 18 and 7.4% of those age 65 or over.

Accomplishments

Rehoboth is credited as being the birthplace of public education in North America. Rehoboth was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records for the town with the most golf courses in the United States.
