Republican Leader of the United States Senate
Encyclopedia : R : RE : REP : Republican Leader of the United States Senate
The Senate Republican Leader is the Floor Leader of the Republican Party in the United States Senate.
The Republican caucus in the United States Senate began to elect a floor leader in 1925. (By comparison, the Democratic caucus began to a floor leader in 1920.) Whether the Republican Leader is the Majority Leader or Minority Leader is dependent upon which party currently controls the majority of the seats in the Senate. If the Senate as equally divided, as last occurred in early 2001, then the party of the President is considered to be the majority party, as his Vice President, who will also be of his party, has a vote in the Senate to break all ties, including those regarding organizational matters.
In recent years, it has become more frequent to refer to the Majority Leader as such and the leader of the minority party as the Leader of his party, claiming that the word "minority" implies lesser power. Former Senator Bob Dole, in particular, preferred to be referred to as "Senate Republican Leader" while serving as Minority Leader.
Most U.S. state senates are organized along lines similar to the U.S. Senate.
