Retard-O-Bot (also referred to as ROB, or The Bot) is an Alternative, Electropunk band that first performed in the year 2000 in Tampa, Florida.
The band consists of Peter Pepper (vocals), Benny Normal (keyboard, bass, ), TJ Brainz (drums). The position of live guitarist has been filled by a number of musicians since the inception of the band.
History
Retard-O-Bot conceptually came into existence in 1999 although they did not perform live until the year 2000. Started as a prank between Peter Pepper and a high school friend, Retard-O-Bot wasn’t much more then a series of drawings with short musical clips to accompany the visuals. ROB quickly recorded their first demo entitled "8-Track" after their first live gig. The recording was appropriately named so after the mere 8 songs contained on the disc nearly all of which were under 2 minutes in length. 2001 saw the recording and release of the band’s second demo entitled “Cassette Tape”. At this time file sharing programs such as Napster were at their peak, thus “Cassette Tape” saw great digital circulation across the world thanks to these programs though the band did not see any monetary return.
A song entitled Façade was on the “Cassette Tape” demo. It was featured on thePRP.com as "the MP3 of the week" shortly after its release. At some point the song’s MP3 file name was changed by someone to “Pimps and Basketballs” and the Artist information was changed to Mindless Self Indulgence, peers of Retard-O-Bot's whom were quickly gaining momentum through their signing to Elektra Records. This created much confusion amongst fans of both bands and is still a subject on their forums today.
In 2002 Retard-O-Bot were personally invited on tour with the controversial S&M, Shock Rock group the Genitorturers by David Vincent, Genitorturers' basses, and former front man of Morbid Angel. The Genitorturers were no strangers to outlandish stage antics, although the debauchery of Peter Pepper had reportedly surprised even them. Destroying 10’ tall robots night after night, setting various objects, instruments, and band mates on fire, rolling around in broken glass and getting into fist-fights with the audience was becoming routine on the month long trek across the country.
Retard-O-Bot released the EP “Scatter Brained” which was much heavier than the past demos. Shortly after “Scatter Brained” was released came “Rabid” in early 2004.
“Rabid” which is often referred to as “The Rabid EP” was greatly regarded as the best the band had released up to that time. The song “Role Models” was the chosen single and by this time a new brand of internet networking was making its rise, known as MySpace.com. At this same time Retard-O-Bot had been invited to join Tub Ring on their up coming tour. The new record, the new tour and the new internet trend seemed to rocket Retard-O-Bot’s popularity and accessibility to new levels.
September 20th of 2005 saw the release of Retard-O-Bot’s first nationally distributed, full length record “Friendship Forever”. The day after the release Retard-O-Bot embarked on the Mindless Self Indulgence tour and then picked up on the Combichrist & Genitorturers tour, then continued with Screaming Mechanical Brain before completing the rest of the country solo. “Friendship Forever” seems to be Retard-O-Bot’s greatest success to date. The single “I Don’t Think You Really Mean It” has made a wake up the Indy Industrial Charts on Myspace.com and there is now a Remix available by the Dance Music guru DJ Moody online. New tour dates and developments are announced regularly on the band’s official website.
