Encyclopedia : R : RE : REU : Reuel
Reuel or Raguel (Hebrew: רְעוּאֵל, Standard Rəʿuʾel Tiberian Rəġûʾēl, "Friend of/is God"; also דְּעוּאֵל, D'u'el, Standard Dəʿuʾel Tiberian Dəġûʾēl) is a Hebrew name associated with several Biblical and/or religious figures.
Biblical persons with this name are:
- Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, who also went by the name "Reuel" (Exodus 2:18). It has been suggested that Reuel was his proper name, and "Jether" or "Jethro" was his official title (i.e., "excellency").
- A son of Esau. (Genesis 36:4,10; I Chronicles 1:35)
- A Gadite (Numbers 2:14), called also Deuel. (1:14; 7:42)
- A Benjaminite. (I Chronicles 9:3.7,8)
- Father-in-law of Tobias (Tobit 7:1,15)
- Within the rabbinic tradition and the Kabbalah, Reuel is one of the seven archangels.
