Rhinebeck is a town in Dutchess County, New York, USA. The population was 7,762 at the 2000 census.

The Town of Rhinebeck in the northwest part of Dutchess County. Rhinebeck is also the name of a village in the town. US Route 9 passes through the town.

History

The town was founded by the purchase of land from the local natives in 1686. It was originally called "Kipsbergen." The town was first settled around 1700. The Town of Rhinebeck was established in 1788 as one of the original towns in the county. In 1812, the town gave up area to form the new Town of Red Hook.

Many of the "Hudson Valley aristocracy" had their mansions in the town.

The town's population in 1900 was 3,472.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 103.2 km² (39.8 mi²). 93.9 km² (36.3 mi²) of it is land and 9.2 km² (3.6 mi²) of it (8.96%) is water.

The west town line, marked by the Hudson River is the border of Ulster County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 7,762 people, 3,001 households, and 1,797 families residing in the town. The population density was 82.7/km² (214.1/mi²). There were 3,255 housing units at an average density of 34.7/km² (89.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 92.50% White, 3.61% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 1.37% Asian, 1.17% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.94% of the population.

There were 3,001 households out of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% were non-families. 34.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the town the population was spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $52,679, and the median income for a family was $67,837. Males had a median income of $49,028 versus $31,995 for females. The per capita income for the town was $29,069. About 3.1% of families and 9.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.9% of those under age 18 and 5.6% of those age 65 or over.
