Story

It all started with all the little faries flying around. Fairies lived peacefully on the planet called Ripple Star. But then one day, a mysterious black cloud (known as Dark Matter) appeared at the blue sky and surrounded the peaceful planet. All of the faries freaked out. (Yes, this is the same Dark Matter as the one from Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Kirby's Dream Land 3.) Dark Matter had come in search of the fairies' secret treasure---A great Crystal. Ribbon knew that dreadful things would come to pass if Dark Matter gained control of the powerful Crystal. Ribbon told the Queen to protect the crystal, and went to outer space to find a Planet so Ribbon could hide it. She grabbed the shining stone and escaped from Ripple Star--just before the planet was completely engulfed. But as Ribbon fled, three dark clouds split from the mass of Dark Matter to chase her through space. The crystal got broken and all of the shards flew off to the other planets. Still holding one of the Crystal Shards, Ribbon fell onto the planet called Pop Star, where she ran smack in to Kirby. Kirby got up and saw a shard. When Ribbon got up, she was confused where she's at. Kirby asked her what was wrong, and she explain what happend to her home planet. So Kirby resolved to help Ribbon recover all of the Crystal Shards and saved her (Ribbon's) home planet!

Romance

Right after Kirby defeats 0², at the end of the game with 100% completion, Ribbon kisses Kirby on the cheek at an award ceremony on her home planet. Kirby blushes and dances around... then falls down a flight of stairs. Ribbon races down to catch Kirby before he gets hurt, as Kirby's other friends (Waddle Dee, Adeleine and King Dedede) simply flinch. This is why that she is noted for being as close as Kirby's ever gotten to a romantic interest. As a result of this, she is frequently featured in fan fiction.

Also, in the false ending, after Kirby beats Miracle Matter without 100% completion, Ribbon and Kirby shake hands. King Dedede's eyes are full of tears immediately afterwards, suggesting that this is supposed to be a touching scene. (Of course, that is immediately contradicted when it turns out that the Queen's been possessed, but, after all, it's supposed to be the bad ending...)
