Encyclopedia : R : RI : RIC : Richard Jordan

Richard Anson Jordan (July 19, 1938August 30, 1993) was an American stage, screen and film actor. He was a long-time member of the New York Shakespeare Festival, and appeared in many plays both on and off Broadway. His films include Logan's Run, Old Boyfriends, Les Misérables, Raise the Titanic!, The Bunker, Dune, The Secret of My Success, The Hunt for Red October and Gettysburg. He was to have played the part of Dr. Charles Nichols in The Fugitive, but fell ill during shooting, and was replaced by Jeroen Krabbé. He died of a brain tumor in 1993.

Richard Jordan's final role was that of Gen. Lewis Armistead in Gettysburg. It has been said that this was one of his proudest achievements, being one of the first members of the cast, some 15 years before making the big screen. He was close friends with the author who wrote the novel, The Killer Angels, that Gettysburg was based upon, and also contributed to the screenplay. In a twist of irony, Richard Jordan's last moment on screen was the death of his character, Brig. General Lewis Armistead in Gettysburg.

Jordan had one daughter with actress Kathleen Widdoes and a son with actress Blair Brown. At the time of his death, he was with actress Marcia Cross. Jordan was 55 years of age.
