Rideau, Cruchon et Compotier is a painting created in about 1893 to 1894 by French artist Paul Cézanne (January 19, 1839 – October 22, 1906). Cézanne was famous for drawing still lifes such as this, which expressed deep feelings though still based itself upon reality. It was works such as these that would eventually lead up to the creation of innovative new styles during the 20th century such as Picasso's cubism.
Ownership history
This painting was sold at Sotheby's, New York on May 10, 1999 for $ 60,502,500, a record price, to the Whitney family, one of the richest families in America. However, later on the painting was resold at a loss and went through the possession of Paris dealer Ambroise Vollard, Cornelis Hoogendijk, Paul Rosenberg, Dr Albert C. Barnes, and the Carroll Carstairs Gallery.
