Ring of Fire (song)

Encyclopedia : R : RI : RIN : Ring of Fire (song)

Ring of Fire is a country music song popularized by Johnny Cash, although it was originally written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore, and recorded by Anita Carter in 1962. The song documents June Carter's feelings of conflict arising from her relationship with Cash, and his drug addiction, with the refrain:

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
''The ring of fire
''The ring of fire
Cash's major contribution to the song, besides his baritone recitation of the lyrics, was the addition of a mariachi-style horn section, an innovation that Cash claimed came to him in a dream (he also used the horn section in "It Ain't Me Babe", recorded around the same time). He recorded the song on March 25, 1963, and it quickly reached #1 on the country music charts.

The song was later covered by other artists, including Wall of Voodoo, Frank Zappa (a reggae version whose arrangement was concocted in anticipation of a Cash guest appearance in Europe that was cancelled at the last minute), Dwight Yoakam, Ray Charles, Grace Jones, Social Distortion, H-Blockx, Dick Dale, Coldplay and The String Cheese Incident. The song was also among a number of Cash songs covered by Joaquin Phoenix for the film Walk the Line.

The lyrics are often said to be a double-entendre for haemorrhoids, but this is incorrect. The Cash family was apparently offended by the association and has firmly refused to allow the song to be used in advertisements for haemorrhoid-relief products. This song was included in the soundtrack to Tony Hawk's Underground 2 and British dance group Dario G will release a mix of the famous tune in time for the FIFA World Cup 2006.

The latest cover version is by Tim Speed, Apollo 440 and Ian McCulloch and will be Liverpool FC's official FA Cup song.

In the film Silent Hill

The song features in the 2006 film Silent Hill when Rose survives the first coming of 'the darkness' in which the town transforms into a hell-like place infested with demons and monsters. As one of these monsters reaches her, and we assume is about to kill her, the 'darkness' disappears and the town reverts to its normal state. She finds herself on the floor next to a jukebox playing Ring of Fire. The lyrics appear appropriate as the 'ring of fire' could refer to the witch burning in the film, and the 'fiery rain' to the ash that continually falls from the sky in Silent Hill.
