Riva del Garda is a town of 14,734 inhabitants in the province of Trento (Italy).

Riva del Garda is located in the north-west corner of Garda Lake also called Benàco (70 m above see level). Westward raises steeply Mount Rocchetta (1,575 m) while eastward Mount Baldo (2,218 m). This setting makes of Riva del Garda one of the most spectacular spots of Garda Lake.

Economy

Tourism is the most important activity of the town. There exists however other industrial activities like paper manufacturing.

History

Riva del Garda belonged to the republic of Venice and later to the Austro-Hungarian empire until 1918, and since then to Italy.

Museum

The Museo Civico is placed in the Rocca, a medieval fortress placed on the lake, bounded by a canal with lifting bridge. It is the seat of frequent cultural activities especially during summer.

Main sights

Notable is the Tenno Lake (6 Km northward), the Ledro Lake (5&nbskp;km westwards) with its paleoetnographic museum and the Varone falls (3 km northwards) of great geological interest.

Sports

With its two harbours Riva del Garda is well equipped for the sport of sailing and windsurfing. Also rock climbing is practised.
