The location of Hong Kong, adjacent to the coast, is far away from the system of major rivers in South China, though the water of her west is influenced by Pearl River. Within 1,042 km² of land, the territories is largely hill with over 200 islands. The terrain thus nurture usually shorter or smaller rivers in Hong Kong. However, these rivers once sustained intensive farming for the need of population before new town development. Relatively longer rivers can be founded in the plains north of the ranges of Tai Mo Shan, where rice growing and fish farming were once everywhere amidst several river systems.
