Encyclopedia : R : RK : RK9 : Rk 95 TP
The Rk 95 TP (Rynnäkkökivääri 95 Taittoperä, Assault rifle 95, Folding stock) is an assault rifle that was produced by the Sako company based in Finland. A small quantity was purchased by the Finnish Defence Forces. The weapon is a further development of the Rk 62 which was based on the Russian AK-47 assault rifle. Like the AK-47 it fires the same 7.62x39 mm ammunition, but few samples were made in 5.56 x 45 mm NATO. It is considered to be the best AK-47 variant in the world by many experts, due to superior quality of materials and workmanship. A civilian semi-automatic version with fixed stock was manufactured under the name Sako M92S.
Rk 95 TP features tritium sights for night-time use in addition to its 150 meters and 300 meters sights. These are very similar to those of M16 rifles used by the US Army. Sights are adjusted only by moving the front sight, the rear sight is solid.
The main differences between the Rk 62 and the Rk 95 TP are
- A new side folding butt stock (similar to the Galil rifle).
- A new muzzle flash suppressor which also functions as a muzzle brake.
- New handguards.
- An enlarged trigger guard to facilitate firing with thick gloves on.
- Better balance: more weight at the front of the rifle.
- Possibility to mount accessories, such as red dot sights, telescopic sight, bipod, tactical lights, night vision devices and bayonets with M16-type mounting.
