Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROT : Ro*tel
Ro*Tel is the brand name of a line of canned tomatoes and green chiles. There are different varieties of Ro*tel in varying degrees of hotness and spiciness. The brand was acquired by ConAgra Foods, Inc. in 2002.
Ro*Tel is best known as one of the two ingredients in Ro*Tel Famous Queso dip. The other ingredient is Velveeta brand processed cheese. This simple dip, generally referred to as simply "Queso," is a staple of entertaining and sports-viewing in the south central United States. The dip can be made by combining a 10oz can of Ro*Tel with a 1lb package of Velveeta and heating; many "Queso" fans add more ingredients such as cooked hamburger, white cheeses, or additional diced vegetables.
Ro*Tel is a standing official sponsor of the SBC Red River Shootout football game between the Universities of Texas and Oklahoma, and sponsors other college football teams and contests.
