Robbie Bachman

Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROB : Robbie Bachman

Robin Bachman or Robbie Bachman (born February 18, 1953) is a drummer and the youngest brother of Canadian guitarist, singer, and songwriter Randy Bachman (who was a founding member of The Guess Who, Brave Belt and Bachman-Turner Overdrive). Robin was the original drummer in Randy's Brave Belt and Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

Robin Bachman had practiced at home with his brother Randy, and played in several Winnipeg rock bands. Randy offered him the Brave Belt drumming job, and Robin accepted.

In 1972, Brave Belt recorded a second album, Brave Belt II. This had a harder sound than the first, with many of the songs featuring C. F. Turner's vocals. The band was moving toward a harder rock sound, and it was at his time that Chad Allen left Brave Belt (just as he had the Guess Who years earlier, another Bachman led band).

Brave Belt toured as a trio for a while, but found it to be too restrictive, and added Bachman brother Tim as a second guitarist. They financed and recorded a third album, and decided to change their name given their new musical direction. The band came up with "Bachman-Turner Overdrive" after seeing a copy of the trucker magazine Overdrive while on tour. They felt that the new name described their new brand of hard rock very well.

Although the line-up of BTO has changed over the years, and Randy Bachman is not currently with the band, up until 2004 BTO was still touring Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Their fans are affectionately called "Gear Heads".

BTO's last CD was an album called "Trial By Fire," which was released as a European import back in 1996.

Randy Murray replaced Randy Bachman in BTO's last line-up when Bachman left the band. He worked with the band from 1991 until 2005, making this line-up the longest enduring of all the BTO line-ups.

Robin posted a clip of a new song called "Can't Take it With You" on his website, but it is unclear if BTO plans on ever recording a new album. He is currently enjoying semi-retirement along with his lovely wife Chrissy, and is being offered many potential opportunities.
