Robertsbridge

Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROB : Robertsbridge

Robertsbridge is a village in East Sussex, England. It is approximately 16 km (10 miles) north of Hastings and 13 miles southeast of Tunbridge Wells. The River Rother passes through the village. The village is part of the civil parish of Salehurst, which has a population of approximately 2,600.

The village is thought to date back to 1176 when a Cistercian abbey was founded there by Robert de St Martin. A Royal Charter was granted in 1198 by Richard I to Rotherbridge. The abbey was dissolved in 1538; however, many of the oldest existing houses in the village date from the 14th and 15th centuries. [link]

It is well served by transport links – the main railway line from Hastings to London runs through the village and the A21 trunk road bypasses it.
