Rock Against Communism
Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROC : Rock Against Communism
Rock Against Communism (RAC) refers to a series of white-power concerts in the United Kingdom in the 1980s, and by extension to the style of music they showcased; it has since come to refer even more generally to white-power music as a whole.
RAC Concerts
Rock Against Communism (RAC) was first announced in the United Kingdom in late 1978 by far-right activists associated with the National Front (NF). It was intended to counter the influence of, and clearly named after, the successful Rock Against Racism organisation. It held one concert in 1979 but did not manage another until spring 1983 (headlined by Skrewdriver), after which they became more regular.
RAC concerts were usually held in secret due to groups such as Anti-Fascist Action and the Anti-Nazi League. They were often headlined by Skrewdriver and over time featured other white-power bands such as Brutal Attack, Skullhead, Squadron, Sudden Impact, Ovaltinees, Lionheart, No Remorse, Violent Storm (now Celtic Warrior), and Battlezone.
In the mid-80s, summer gigs were often held at the Suffolk home of Edgar Griffin, father of the then NF organiser and subsequent British National Party National Chairman, Nick Griffin.
By the late 1980s, the RAC name had given way first to the White Noise Club, another NF front group, and later Blood and Honour, set up by Skrewdriver frontman Ian Stuart and his friend Nicky Crane when they fell out with the NF leadership of the time.
RAC Music
In more current usage, RAC refers to white-power music, typically with nationalistic, neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic themes. Despite its name, RAC music rarely references to communism. Musically, RAC is influenced by Oi!, metal, and Southern rock.
As the Hardcore Punk scene grows, many White Power bands have sprung up that have a stronger Hardcore Punk than Oi! influence. Bands leading the hatecore charge include Angry Aryans, Blue Eyed Devils and H8Machine. Also popular among White Racialists is National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM) which is a racist form of black metal that often focuses on Norse mythology and a desire to return to a romanticized pre-Christian Europe. Groups in this genre are Burzum (its sole member Varg Vikernes is one of the originators of this genre and is in prison for murder in his native Norway), and Graveland from Poland. Especially in Europe, white racist hip-hop acts such as Aryan Duo are beginning to spring up.[link]
