Rockaway Beach, Queens

Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROC : Rockaway Beach, Queens

Rockaway Beach is a neighborhood in the Rockaways in Queens County, New York in the USA. It is on the south shore of Long Island and is inside New York City. It is named for Rockaway Beach, which is the largest urban beach in the United States, stretching for miles along the Rockaway Peninsula facing the Atlantic Ocean.

Rockaway Beach is known as the "Irish Riviera" because of the large Irish-American population in the area, living in large homes that sometimes resemble mansions, especially west of Beach 116th Street. Rockaway Beach is immortalized in the classic 1977 Ramones song "Rockaway Beach".

The neighborhood, like all of New York City, is served by the New York City Department of Education. Rockaway Beach residents are zoned to either P.S. 183 Dr. Richard R. Green, or P.S. 114 and M.S. 180 Gerald R. Dever. There is no high school zoning as all New York City residents who wish to attend a public high school must apply to high schools. Nearby high schools include Far Rockaway High School and Beach Channel High School.
