Roehampton

Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROE : Roehampton

Roehampton is a place in south London, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It lies between Putney to the east, Barnes to the north, Richmond Park to the west and Kingston to the south. It is 6.3 miles (10.1 km) south west of Charing Cross.

Roehampton was the site of major council-house building after world war 2: around 10,000 people are now housed on the sprawling Alton Estate which runs along the edge of Richmond Park. The estate comprises a mix of council housing styles, much of which was based on the designs of the architect Le Corbusier. The estate has a rough reputation and there remains a huge amount of deprivation here, but this dwindled slightly as Wandsworth Councilhas sold off a lot of properties here, which have since been sublet - often to students of Roehampton University, and government investment in schemes like SureStart have made a mark.

In contrast, much of the old village of Roehampton still remains; this is a much more affluent area, dominated by large detached houses. The Bank of England Sports Club, the Priory Clinic, the University of Roehampton, the Roehampton Club (with its 18-hole golf course) and the Lennox Estate on the edge of East Sheen are also part of Roehampton. An old watering trough for Victorian carriages at the junction of Medfield Street and Roehampton Lane still remains.

It is home to Roehampton University.
