Roger Miller (rock musician)

Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROG : Roger Miller (rock musician)

Roger Miller is a guitarist from Boston, Massachusetts, USA, best known for for his work with Mission of Burma. He is originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan.Attending CalArts in 1976, majoring in Composition, he would eventually, as he said, droupout for punk rock.

Mission of Burma disbanded in 1983 due to Miller's worsening tinnitus, attributed in large part to their notoriously loud live performances. Miller then turned his attention to Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic, which he left in the 90s to produce several solo efforts and film scores.

Miller is currently a member of [the Alloy Orchestra], a trio that composes new scores for silent films. The name of the group refers to the fact that two of the members, Ken Winokur and Terry Donohue, are percussionists who use a great deal of "found" metal objects, such as hubcaps, springs and pots, to create sounds.

Other Roger Miller current musical projects include: Binary System, a prepared piano/drum duo with percussionist Larry Dersch; Hooker/Miller/Ranaldo, an improvisation group comprised of William Hooker (percussion), Lee Renaldo (guitar Sonic Youth, and Roger Miller (bass); and M3, an ongoing musical collaboration with Benjamin Miller and Lawrence Miller, brothers of Roger. Former projects include Maximum Electric Piano (solo prepared piano with loops), No Man (with Russell Smith on bass and Ken Winokur or Malcolm Travis on drums) and Elemental Guitar (solo prepared guitar with loops).
