Rogers Television
Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROG : Rogers Television
Rogers Television is the brand of community channels owned by Rogers Cable Inc., many of which share common programmes. Rogers Television broadcasts into the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario. Some channels broadcast in both the English and French languages, often on separate channels; see Télévision Rogers for the French version.
Rogers Television serves over 2.3 million cable subscribers. Programming on the channels are produced with the assistance of volunteers. This programming was created in response to CRTC regulations which previously required that cable companies produce local content (this is no longer required but strongly encouraged [link]). This requirement does not apply to satellite providers and is the main reason that cable providers can claim to have more local coverage.
Rogers Television is only available on cable and is a major selling point for Rogers cable services. In parternship with Cogeco Cable, Rogers Television in Ontario provides comprehensive coverage of the Ontario Hockey League with all shows being available only on cable either on the local station or all OHL games on the Sports Action Pack. New Brunswick systems air Quebec Major Junior Hockey League games, in partnership with EastLink, while Newfoundland systems air home games of the QMJHL's St. John's Fog Devils. Other local programming includes First Local, a magazine style news show seen in some Ontario and New Brunswick markets, and the popular St. John's-area talk show Out of the Fog.
Comedian Tom Green started his career on the Rogers community channel in Ottawa. The Tom Green Show was based in Ottawa between 1993 and 1999.
